Eating a Wild Apple After Jogging

it may be the act
of pulling down the fruit
that makes the taste
so satisfying
freed from the tree
the apple squeezed
between teeth
tart skin giving way
to the warm, sweet center

this is what we should eat!
in summer when sun
bakes the sweat out of us
here’s what we need
clean, restored
the pure water of the earth
inside the fruit of paradise.
