Cherry Blossoms

walking past the wild cherry tree going nova
in this early spring heat i remember the story
of the chinese poet who wrote his verses
on scraps of rice paper then cast them into the river
to drift away among the floating cherry blossoms

i’m jogging beside the lake when a gust of wind
sets hundreds of cherry blossom petals free
to swirl down in the hot spring sunshine
and suddenly i’m sliding through
a warm snowstorm of pink silk
